Lorenzo Musetti beat James Duckworth 7-5 6-1 to reach the third round at the National Bank Open Open Presented by Rogers in Toronto.
Musetti stopped a three-match losing streak after losing in the first round at Wimbledon and Washington.
Musetti owns a Tour-leading 17 wins at Mastsrs 1000 tournaments this year. He achieved 13 of these 17 wins on clay. He reached the semifinals at Masters 1000 events on clay in Montecarlo, Madrid and Rome and at the Grand Slam tournament in Roland Garros.
Musetti set up a second round match against Alex Michelsen, who beat Tomas Barrios Vera 7-6 (9-7) 6-3.
Musetti did not convert five break points in a 16-point fourth game. Duckworth held serve to draw level to 2-2. Duckworth aved a break point in the eighth game. Musett went down 15-40 in the eleventh game, but he won four points to hold serve. Musetti broke serve on the first of his second set points in the 12th game to win the first set 7-5.
Musetti broke serve in the second game and held serve to open up a 3-0 lead. The Italian player went up a double break in the sixth game and held serve at love to win the second set 6-1.
